I have a few ideas.

Loud rocker arms
- warm up engine, then take off the valve cover and do a standard valve clearance adjustment. See FSM for specs

High idle

- warm up engine and adjust idle speed, then idle mixture, then again idle speed. See FSM for suggestions on idle

Exhaust noise

- popping is just a missfire. Replace sparkplugs after adjusting idle.

- Check all bolts that hold down the carb and that hold the intake manifold to the head. Make sure there are no vacuum leaks

- Now check ignition timing

Does it run smoother with the choke more on?

There is no replacement time for ignition components like the wires cap and rotor. If they look bad... they are

Easy stuff first...

Check the points are in good shape and the gap around 0.020"

Firing order look ok.... 1342.

Timing 50 I'm not sure on this so check owner's manual

Pull plugs and post a picture of them. Gap should be 0.032". Are the front two or back two different in color than the other two?

Harder stuff...

Set or check the valve lash. 0.008" intake and 0.010" cold or 0.010" and 0.012" hot. I suspect a tight exhaust valve.

After setting lash check the compression.
