setting air fuel mixture screw on intake

Recommended Posts

. when setting A/F ratio screw

is it best to screw all the way in 1st, and then back out until highest smooth vacuum is achieved

or

start with screw out and turn in until highest vacuum is achieved ?

  and other question is

when turning  screw in all the way.  does all the way in  give more  ( air ) or  more ( fuel ) ?

Engine must be thoroughly warmed up with choke off. At least 1/2 hour running.

Timing must be correct. Check but I think the '82 is the same as all Z24s at 3 degrees BTDC

Valve lash must be set 0.012" hot for both valves.

If the above are not set now, you will have to perform the mixture adjustment again when they are.

Idle speed screw.... in is more air, out is less air

Idle mixture screw.... in is less fuel (leaner) out is more fuel (richer)

If running just pick a direction, lets say inward, so it's leaner, and turn the idle mixture screw until the idle becomes worse, then slowly turn the opposite direction outward (richer)and it should improve. Keep going until it worsens. (over rich) You'll probably find there is maybe up to a full turn where it runs fairly good but drops off on either side. Turn it back about half way and try to be in the middle. A guess is good enough. The idle hopefully is improved and has revved up slightly. Turn the idle speed screw down to about 750. Perform the in and out turning of the idle mixture screw and try to find the best possible smooth idle and set in the middle. Keep turning the engine idle speed down and adjusting the mixture screw back and forth untill you cannot improve the idle quality any more and the idle remains at about 750 or so.

the tiny spring fell off the plastic fast idle cam ladder step  thing.

i tried putting spring  back on using needle nose pliers while carb was still bolted.

and i could not do it,

so i had to take carb off. and remove cam and that is when i saw cam was wore out

and brass set screw was sliding past 2nd ladder mark .

so i squared up edges of cam with a Emory board and grinded the brass screw flat so it would have sharp edge to grab 2nd step of ladder

2nd step like haynes manual says.

and put it back on . and everything is good and idle is  great

except...  i have to solve transmission locking up issue
