Torque converter woes....

Well, as I stood in the garage tonight coming up with reasons as to why I wasn't gunna accomplish anything. I came up with a conundrum :/

I have 2 L series auto trannys and one maxima auto tranny.

In the confusion that is my life I have no clue which torque converter is which

So, my question.

Are the torque converters interchangeable between a 620 auto trans and a maxima auto trans?

Depends on the year Maxima.  The early style, 3N71B trans TQC was used until 1985 with the 3-speed.  The later style used in the L4N71B (and later 3N71B transmissions) started being used in 1984.  So there's overlap.  And there are at least 3 incompatible with each other TQCs.  One of which is obvious- it's bigger, with a larger pilot and larger bolt circle, but I think that's the one used on the VG30.   The smaller ones basically look the same size (same diameter, bolt circle, and pilot), but the difference is the presence of a lockup clutch.

Through '81 was a normal garden variety 3 speed.

'82 was a 3 speed with locking torque converter.

'83 and '84 had the L4N81B 4 speed automatic.

These are all model year Maxima models so from June '82 on is the next year, '83.

The locking torque converter won't bolt to your 620 garden variety flex plate.

Locking and L4N71B look like the left side. Garden variety 3 speed on right.

Both 3 speeds, even the locking ones, will say 3N71B on them. (might) say L3N71B. There is confusion about the L. I believe this means Light duty not Locking torque converter.  I think the L3N71B is for L24 use. There are E3N71Bs which are heavier duty like the non turbo 280zx.

Look around the front shift lever area for a tag. What are the numbers???
