superbee717
im having my head rebuilt on my 73 L16 right now and I just ordered a new weber k663 kit . right now Im using a stock intake and exhaust manifold, but I have a header and cannon down draft intake on a 78 parts truck with a L20 . my question is should I go ahead and put this header intake setup on my L16 while its torn down and will it fit and work properly or better than stock. thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No. If it really is a '78 it will have a W58 head (look between first two spark plugs at bottom of head) with round exhaust ports that will not seal to your 210 L16 head's square exhaust ports. Your L16 exhaust is basically a cast iron header... take a good look at it. Lot of research and money went into that manifold, definitely keep it!!! The Cannon intake might have larger runners and ports than your stock L16 intake. For what it's worth. Quote Link to comment
superbee717
well as usual I misinformed you . its a 1977 with a u67 head. exhaust ports are square so Im guessing now with this new corrected info the header and intake will work on the L16????? sorry king rat my bad. I finally got it off the parts truck today and the bottom bolts were a bitch to get out. should I sale this stuff or install it on mine.what ya think Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The header will work with your L16 but they are a huge pain in the ass to put on and put up with. You can run it (or try to run it) if you like, I just find the stock L16 is just as good, better actually, The only advantage of a header is that it weighs less Stock manifold NEVER, EVER wears out. It fits perfectly. Quieter Cooler under hood temps Doesn't rattle or come loose Zero maintainance costs . Quote Link to comment
superbee717
I hear ya I think im gonna put it up for sale . hell I got the header unbolted but still haven't got it out . what a pain in the but.my header is a lot longer than the one in your pics . swear im gonna have to drop tranny to get it out. thanks for the info. much appreciated. datzenmike
I had a new one and put it on my 521 back in the '70s. Had to remove the torsion bar and unbolt the motor mount to get it near the engine. Took two tries to get the thing on and tight enough to hold water in the intake. Took me all weekend to do the swap. Cut up a perfectly good down pipe too. Well the bolts on the collector kept coming loose, it leaked, was noisy, needed dents to clear things and the 10% increase in HP just wasn't there.... zero difference just noise. Withing 6 months it was all rusty and I was fed up with it enough to wish I had never ever done this. I would have swapped it back to stock except for all the work involved.... and I had already thrown the old manifold away. I would spare you all this. Quote Link to comment
