jose7467
Can't find the engine # on my 69 Datsun 521 I also noticed today that the bed sits higher than the front is it possible that the bed of the truck is from a different year? Or that it isn't fitted correctly? posting pics of the Datsun in question. http://imgur.com/a/Mwx2Z Quote Link to comment

jose7467
I take it the distributor is the thing with cables leading to the spark plugs yes? I looked above it on the engine moved some dirt with my finger and saw some numbers but nothing indicating the engine # Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Right above the starter should be cast numbers. Quote Link to comment
jose7467
found the serial number but it appears the numbers next to it which identify the engine is peeled/rusted off (was painted) edit: can anyone tell by my pictures what engine it is or is it not possible? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
It is stamped into the metal, so cannot peel off. Clean it well and you'll be able to read it. I use a chisel to scrape the paint and grime off Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Or post pics of the engine and we can tell you in a minute. Quote Link to comment
jose7467
Or post pics of the engine and we can tell you in a minute. Just got off the phone with Nissan to see if using the serial # could get me the engine model # and they said they don't keep records on cars older than 25 years? That's unfortunate edit: just found a datsun 1600 badge in the glove compartment now I'm really confused as the plate behind the hood says the engine sholud be a j13 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
That is a J13 engine. It clearly says "J" on the stamped area. Quote Link to comment
jose7467
That is a J13 engine. It clearly says "J" on the stamped area. That is true but for 69 and above I read that there is also a j15 engine so that's why I am confused as to what engine this 521 really has because of the 1600 badge I found and the plated inside the engine bay saying its a j13 thanks for your help though I'm still learning and appreciate your time.
