Lakec423
What is the easiest and quickest way to take the head off my 1981 datsun I keep having problems with blowing head gaskets ??????? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Leave engine in truck. Remove cam cover. Unbolt cam pulley. Undo the exhaust pipe. Unbolt the cylinder head. It would be best to turn engine to TDC first and block the timing chain but that will add time. To prevent head gaskets blowing, be sure to prep the block face and head face. Clean and chase the head bolt holes. Remove all traces of oil from gasket faces. Use a torque wrench and tighten in three steps per the procedure in a service manual. Quote Link to comment
KlassicMotion
Not only prep the block and head face, but check them for warpage too with a trusted straight edge and feeler gauge. I believe the service manual explains this procedure. Usually you don't just "blow" a gasket. Typically it's because something is warped and needs re-surfacing. Quote Link to comment

Its absolutely CRITICAL that you block the timing chain. It has a tensioner that WILL fall out if any slack is introduced by loosening the cam sprocket. See that little shoe at the bottom of the blue wedge? It's spring loaded and wil pop out, The fix is to take the whole front off the motor and adds 4 hours of unnecessary work. Once it gets out it's like putting tooth paste back in the tube. Loosen the cam sprocket by placing a socket extension through it to lock it. DO NOT REMOVE BOLT... just loosen it for now. Set the motor to TDC and place in neutral and block the wheels. Now block the cam chain so the tensioner cannot fall out. Now it is safe to mark the cam/chain relationship for when putting it together and remove the cam sprocket. It's often much easier to remove the exhaust down pipe and lift the head off with both manifolds attached. If the head needs milling you can easily get at the bolts with the head off the block. Loosen the head bolts from the front and back working your way to the center. Quote Link to comment
