akumazedex
Hey everyone, I just switched over to HEI ignition on my 260z, question is, where do I hook up my tach to? I have an aftermarket tach that just needs a signal. On my tach instructions it says if I have gm/HEI ignition I need to hook it up to a tach signal? Otherwise just hook it up to the negative side of the coil. Can I just leave it hooked up to the negative side? Or do I need one of those signal converters? Thanks in advance! :P Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
You should be good running out of the coil -. I know some newer tachs won't work off of old Datto ignitions because they don't produce a square wave signal and require a signal converter. Dunno about what you have. Quote Link to comment
akumazedex
Cool ill try it out Quote Link to comment
Ooph!
If it is a stock type HEI there should be "TACH" marked on top of the area where the connections are made. It's been awhile but I believe it's the connection on the end sideways compared to the others. I used the original Chevy two pin connector for the distributor and used a spade lug for the tach on my early model Chevy. Quote Link to comment
akumazedex
This is my HEI set up It gets powered up from the ignition switch and gets signal from the stock 260 dizzy. I can't find anyone that documented the complete wiring for this (tach). Everything works as it should but I can't figure out how to hook up the tach. Quote Link to comment
Ooph!
Ah I understand what you guy's are doing now, yes the coil (-) would be the place to connect the tach. Quote Link to comment
akumazedex
Thing is, coil + would spark really bad every time j try to connect it, I read somewhere I need a resistor to bring down the voltage to the tach. Quote Link to comment
Ooph!
try coil Minus Quote Link to comment
re037
connect tach (stock blue wire) to coil - . mine had color faded to green so it was confusing for me. also remove the stock transistor from pass side foot area if you havent done so Quote Link to comment
akumazedex
My 260 gets rpm signal directly from the dizzy. :/ Black and green wires from dizzy go straight to tach Quote Link to comment
akumazedex
So still no luck on the tach, even got another one just in case I fried mine. Even ran a resistor to the tach wire with no luck. Ideas? Quote Link to comment
