mini&therat
So I have a 1983 720 KC, 2.4, 4X4 with engine troubles. It sounds like valve clatter but those have been checked, fixed and are fine. The cam is good to go. Using a scope, it sounds like the #3 piston is the culprit. The clatter can't be heard at idle but is loud under increasing load. Compression is low but not horrible (110-120ish). Does anyone know what this could be? I was thinking of either trying to fix it or replacing it. If I have to replace, does anyone have an engine in the Puget Sound area for sale or know of a shop that does rebuilds? I will try to post pics of it soon. I'm also looking for a stock, front brush guard and stock seats. Thanks, Alain Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well hard to say. Check timing... about 3-5 degrees BTDC. Confirm that both intake and exhaust side coils are firing. Pull all plugs and compare to the #3 cylinder. Won't cost anything. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
110-120 lbs is horrible. Do a wet compression test to double-check it. I'm with Mike, the Z24 8-plug heads can make noise if the plug is firing wrong. Quote Link to comment
mini&therat
Thanks for the tips. I will check the timing, etc. this weekend and keep you all posted. Alain Quote Link to comment
mini&therat
So it doesn't look like it's the timing. I'm going to drive it until I find a good replacement or a reasonable rebuild shop. Any suggestions on a good rebuild shop in the Everett area? I can do a lot of the R&R myself just not the internal rebuild stuff. Also looking for the following: --- a pair of black/gray stock seats --- --- Black/gray door panels --- --- Stock 4x4 gas tank --- Thank you all Bad pics of truck Quote Link to comment
