kneo
Hi. I have a Nissan Ichi Van (Mexican release) that has a 4 in line Datsun engine. It has been serving in our family for a couple of decades now and its quite reliable. Recently I have been paying more attention to it, doing thing myself like changing oil, contact points, cap, filters and other things, however I do not know what is the model of the engine and dont have the manual for it. I would like to understand this engine better and be able to tune it, as of now it runs more or less decently but cold start is a bit difficult, choke needs to be closed about 2/3. I have a little bit of problems with the engine idling on low revs reliably so I turned the distribuitor for higher idle speeds. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Nice one-box van you have there. It has a J-series motor, perhaps a J18. > cold start is a bit difficult, choke needs to be closed about 2/3. Yes, close it all the way and it will start better. As soon as the engine fires, push the choke knob in partway. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You shouldn't adjust the distributor to set the idle speed. In effect you are advancing the timing. This may be OK at idle and low speeds but may advance too much on the highway. The idle speed is adjusted by a screw on the carb near the throttle cable. Quote Link to comment
