steering wheel is locking up when im making turns

so just this week my steering wheel has been locking up on a turn. any sugestions? dont really feel like ending up in a ditch somewhere or into another car next to me.

Did you adjust the steering box lately?

not yet. that was my next step

Steering gear wear is mostly in the center or straight ahead position and less at full lock. If you adjust the gear lash in the center where all the wear is it will too tight on the turn positions. Be sure to have both wheels up off the ground when making adjustments to the box.Turn the wheel quickly from lock to lock feeling for any tight spots. If there is, slacken off the adjustment slightly. Usually a box wears and becomes loose not tighter.

 

Inspect the idler arm. may need grease or is worn out.

Raise the front and turn lock to lock, looking for any steering part rubbing anything else. This could simply be a piece of tree branch jammed up in there.

but more likely the steering.linkage is very worn, or damaged
