Help! Charge lights on...!

Justin

Recommended Posts

....And there's a 13-14 reading on the multi-meter at the battery. It's like 14.02 directly on the alternator if I'm testing the right post, lol.

My blinkers don't work, my left brake-lights out but the headlights seem OK.

What do I need to check/test to determine my problem?

Truck is a 1973, not sure if the alternator is original. The steadiest/highest output I've got was 14.44

Any help?

Yes, clean the Fuse Box. Very common problem on 40-year old vehicle.

For directions see Fuse Box Cleaning

Per your owner's manual, the light may dimly glow at idle and is not necessarily a sign of problem.

14.02 is low, it must be checked at 1200 RPM or higher to get accurate regulator reading. headlights & heater fan off. 14.44 is OK.

dim CHG light might mean:

* RPM too low

* Battery not fully charged

* Slightly corroded wiring connectors (so clean the Fuse Box)

bright CHG light means

* alternator not charging (but 13.5+ means it is charging)

Left brake light probably means the bulb is burned out. Remove it and inspect it. It might be rusty, or just burnt out.

Blinkers don't work how? The solution depends on it. Light up but don't blink? Don't light up? One side doesn't blink? Front lights up, but not rear?

Thanks guys!

ggzilla-

I'm pretty sure it's my fuse block. When the charge light isn't on and I use my blinkers it goes on, instead of the blinkers.

As for the brake light, I checked the bulb, and it's good. And it works intermittently, so that kind of reinforces the "dirty component" theory.
