5spd wont shift after reassembly.

alright, I have a early 80s 5spd. took it apart, it went back together o.k. but is stuck in reverse while it should be in neutral. Other gears just stall motor without rocking forwars or rearward. Any ideas? :confused:

you have to pull it out and remove the tailhousing the correctly align the shifter mechanism ...

right on, I figured it out. you can actually kinda get to it if you remove the reverse check switch cylinder then reach in with a bent screwdriver. thanks for your reply

So you are shifting by using a bent screwdriver? Or did you loosen the tail housing and reposition it?

I repositioned it with a bent screwdriver> works perfect now! B) shifter now has control.

Yes this would work, although I did not think of it. All you need to do is hold the shifter over towards 1st/2nd and that keeps the selector out of the way. Just reach in and 'flick' the shift rod back to the rear till it lines up. Ingenious!
