saturn alternator voltage spike

hey folks I just had a recurring problem that happened last time at canby. I was washing the car engine bay specifically hood up engine on, I happen to spritz the alternator and heard the engine lug down and I check my voltmeter and I noticed it was pumping out well over 16 volts.

 

I have since unpluged the alternator and ran it for 20 minutes trying to heated everythng up and dry i tout.

 

I even used a leaf blower. every time I started up I can watch volt meter go from 12,14 and then fly over to 16.

 

what is the deal with this thing?

 

All connections are good, only happens with water.

Only thing I can see is the brushes getting wet and loosing contact. My 620 would do this going through deep puddles. The charge light would come on and the lights dim slightly. A hundred meters on away it would go.

This things gets ridiculous though, takes hours to dry out and fix itself, voltage shoots to nearly 20...
