help on struts 1976-280z

hi everyone! i need help :confused: i have a 1976 280z and i'm trying to change the strust , but i cant get the center nut off i don't have air tools soooo :w00t: i'm doing it old school , the new ones are kyb i'm doing all 4 :crying: the instructions on the new struts say to use hand tools not to use air tools so how can i take them off i need help im frustrated i tried three different times :yawn:

Change the struts? Or to fit strut insert cartridges? Often you can just change the oil to make them like new.

 

To get the top nut off (the one just below the hood), air tools are not needed. Just turn off with a socket, they are only supposed to be torqued to 69 pounds max. I've never used an air wrench to remove any strut piston nut on any car let alone Datsun.

 

If the strut assembly is off the car, hold the strut top from turning by jamming a bar or large screwdriver between the top and one of the three body-attachment studs, then use your wrench to turn the nut counter-clockwise to remove.

i highly recommend you get a repair manual, because they have photos/diagrams of how to do every procedure including how to remove the strut rod nut.

 

Notice he has one hand on a screwdriver to keep the strut top from turning. It isn't necessary if the strut assembly is still in the car.
