AtlanticCoastDatsun
Did the 81 510's with the z20 come with a fs5w71b? Guy I know is selling a 5 speed out of an 81, he has no pictures. I was curious if it had the same bellhousing as an L series. In other words, will this tranny interchange with the fs5w71b from the 77-79 620's? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
No. The '81 510 had a FS5W63A. Shorter, and not the same tilt as the L-series. Quote Link to comment

As Doug mentioned, the '81 would usually have a Z series FS5W63A 5 speed but it is an option and usually has a short F4W63 4 speed.. Without seeing it there's no way to know for sure, the owner could be mistaken. If it is a 63A dogleg and is cheap, it can be used for parts for or converted to an L series dogleg by swapping the front case half. The Z series dogleg has a closer ratio gear set in them than the L series. Again, only if cheap, save it and maybe trade it or pass it on. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
I would highly recommend NOT using a dogleg in a truck anyway. It's just not that strong. If you want an EASY swap, get a 5-speed from another 620, or from a 280Z. 280ZX will work too, but it'll be a slug off the line with one from a 81-83 due to the close ratio 1st gear.
