qwik510
This Transmission came attached to an L20B. I was told it was pulled from a good running 77 Datsun 620 Pickup. No too many numbers on it but from what I can tell and was told it is a 5 speed (at least it goes into 5 gear positions on the shifter plus reverse) overall length measures approx. 31". The input shaft feels tight and the gears shift easily and lock into place properly so I am thinking it is a pretty good transmission. I am sure King Rat will probably know the answer (he knows all about Transmissions  ) but I thought I would post this for all to see in case someone else could benefit from the info. datsunaholic
Looks like a stock '77 5-speed to me. Could be a '78 though. They don't look any different of course because they'd be identical. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes. Built before '80, mount appears to be the truck type. Doubtfull this is a 280z or first year zx or similar year 810/Maxima as it has more than just the reverse light switch. The '79 has lower gearing inside to match the 4.11 differential on that year 620. To check, place in 1st gear and turn the input shaft 20 times* as accurately as you can. If it's a '79 the output shaft spline will turn 6 times.... if a '77 or '78 it will turn only 5.5 times. It's noticeable if you watch carefully. *( had to correct this but correct now I believe) BTW the '77-'79 z/zx would also turn 5.5 times. Quote Link to comment
qwik510
Would anyone know the gear ratios of this trans? would it be a good 5 speed to swap into a 240Z with an L24? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
OK it's a '78 (possibly '79) truck. It has the top gear switch in it not used in '77. 280z/zx trannys did not use them either. Only way to tell is turn the input while in 1st gear 20 times. If the output turns 6 times it's a '79. If it turns only 5.5 times it's a '78. '78 ratios 1st.... 3.321 2nd... 2.077 3rd.... 1.308 4th.... 1.000 5th.... 0.864 '79 ratios.... this would be the closest match to the ratios on the 240z 4 speed but both will work quite well. 1st.... 3.592 2nd... 2.246 3rd.... 1.415 4th.... 1.000 5th.... 0.882 Quote Link to comment
