My Project 280Z -- Switching directions mid-project

First off, hello. My name is Chris, or Ish. I am from Arkansas. I've driven Hondas until this point (But I'm not one of those "VTEC JUST KICKED IN YO" types, trust me). I have a Fit for daily driving. My first car was a Del Sol.

Well, about a year ago, I got my hands on a title-less 1977 280Z 5-speed in Bryant. I decided it was time to step into a serious car realm, and wanted to get a project car to build to possibly auto-cross or take to a local drag strip on the weekends and drive on the street. It's been a fight trying to figure out how to get a bonded title in AR. So far, I have no clue where to get the bond taken out to put on the title, but the background check and all prior stuff has turned out fine...which has held me back from sinking serious money into it.

The engine was "rebuilt" by the person who owned it before me, but my dad (my partner in this project) and I decided to tear it down anyway and give it a once-over to be sure nothing was unchecked. Sure enough, there were a few problems--A connecting rod bolt snapped while being torqued and had been stretched, so those needed to be replaced (by ARP replacements), and the block probably should have been bored. Also, it is a points distributor, which if I read correctly, a 77 and 78 should have an electronic distributor for the fuel injection.

I had planned on doing a stroker/turbo setup on this car in the future, but after some consideration and pricing...I've thought of going a different route. I have seen some 280Z's with the small block Chevy's, and I am impressed with what they put out. Also, I like having less electronic stuff to deal with (Sounds strange for a Honda guy, I bet) , so I really considering using a small block V8. But, I really don't want a 350 or 383 stroker. I had tossed the idea around about using a Ford, but then I thought of using a 400 Small Block. I still have some questions about the changeover, but I'm really liking the idea.

Hopefully, as it all comes together I can become a part of this community. :)
