I just run plain ol 90w gear oil with a over the counter LSD additive in my wagon its been seeing alot of spirited daily driving works fine.

 

Im not sure why, but the FSM says not to run GL5 in our wagons. Not sure if the critical parts were removed when you went to LSD or not...

My Datsun FSM says

* GL4 for transmission

* GL5 for differential

 

The common word on Ratsun is: don't use GL5 in the gearbox presumably because of bronze transmission parts. Although some GL5 manufacturers warrant their modern GL5 for bronze parts.

 

Specifically the 510 Wagon...

* There is no 'yellow metal' in the differential, so you can use GL5, even though they recommend GL4 for the H190 (wagon differential). But GL4 is good enough and works in the transmission too.

 

* Perhaps the shear loads are higher in the R180 (sedan differential) so they recommend the higher spec GL5.

Thanks to Mike Klotz and something I remember he posted about the early diffs. Sure enough there are some copper or bronze parts in the 510 wagon. Looks like a thrust washer on the side gears. GL5 contains about 59% more sulphur additives that while protecting the steel gear teeth will corrode the copper or 'yellow metal' in transmissions and now... the 510 goon H-190.

Thanks 69dime this I did not know about until you made me re-think it. GL-4 it is for the stock goon diff.
