The last L 5 speed made is now no less than 27 years old. (Maxima) 28 years old, (280zx non turbo) 30 years old, (720) 31 years old (620). Good luck finding one with 20K on it. Some older odometers only went to 99,999 so one that says 20K will likely be 220K or 320K or more!

Yes oh Esteemed and honored forum God DatzenMike! I was simply joking for the enjoyment of those reading my wish list.

Where can I find a "Z-car 5-speed transmission" where do those come out of? The 5th gear is high... is the 1st gear shite for pulling heavy stuff up hills?

Ah, humor in the form of exaggeration and sarcasm. Now that I know it's way funnier. :)

Wide ratio FS5W71B.................. '79 620 and '80 720 (2wd) Geared for a heavy truck carrying a load for easier take-offs from a stop or on a grade. On a lighter car with smaller diameter tires you almost do not even need first gear. Good for stop and go traffic. Large RPM drop between gears. *I don't advise this one for a car but it will work just fine.

1st.... 3.592

2nd... 2.246

3rd.... 1.415

4th.... 1.000

5th.... 0.882

Medium ratio FS5W71B ............. '77-'78 620, '77-'79 280z and zx, '80 - '84 Maxima. *Good all round gearing for take offs from a start and stop and go traffic if you live in the city.

1st.... 3.321

2nd... 2.071

3rd.... 1.308

4th.... 1.000

5th.... 0.864

Close ratio FS5W71B................... '80-'83 280zx non turbo. Very very slightly more effort on take off from stops wih a 4 cylinder motor. Gears are much 'closer' together so there is less RPM drop between shifts keeping the motor revved up in it's power making range. Good for racing or highway where there are minimal stops. Both have monster overdrive ratios good for highway economy. The '81-'83 is over 25% so a 1,000 RPM drop shifting at 4,000 into 5th gear! *Not the best if you do most of your driving in traffic. This tranny is best out in the country side and highway. If using this tranny you could run a lower differential ratio like a 4.11 or 4.375. This would give blinding acceleration yet good economy on the highway with the large overdrive.

1st.... 3.062

2nd... 1.858

3rd.... 1.308

4th.... 1.000

5th.... 0.773... '80 only, '81-'83 had 0.745

is that 5spd dogleg you have listed no good for your purposes?

Doglegs are a little light duty for a truck seeing as how Nissan built the L20B powered 620 with a six cylinder Z car transmission to take the abuse. The dogleg is also shorter than the 620 auto or 4 speed it replaces and the driveshaft will need to be lengthened.

Right, no dog leg in my truck. the one I have came out of 620Kevin's 510, its in great shape.

The info you sent Mike, is awesome, thanks so much for doing what you do.

I've got hard cash in hand, someone has a 5 speed laying around.

My question now is this, how do I tell the Medium ratio FS5W71B apart from the others with the same FS5W71B tag?
