Looks like the exhaust valve was hitting the piston. thoughts?

number 1 piston

That's the intake. The smaller marks to the front are the exhaust. I doubt that it's just chance that the #1 and #4 hit the piston tops. When put together the crank was 180 out or the cam was. Soon as it was turned it hit and 'seized'.

Seen a lot worse that ran fine, including a machine screw embedded in a piston top. Pulled it out, new HG and go.

this is on the L20B. it is not seized and turns fine (by hand). the L16 is seized and I am trying to pull that asap

I think that Datzenmike is saying that as they were turning the crank to #1 TDC to install the timing chain on initial assembly, that the cam was turned just enough to cause this interference and temporarily seized the motor until the cam turned which changed the valves.

I dont see anything there that i wouldn't reassemble. Put a new headgasket on it and go.
