carnuck
LD28 motor. Will the Z24 trans from my '85 pickup I'm parting bolt up? Thinking about doing a swap to a Jeep with this motor. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
It will bolt up, but it will be tiled all wrong. You dont want to do it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes it will bolt up to the diesel but it won't work properly. It may not be very obvious but the diesel and the Z motors sit in the engine compartment leaning in different directions. The LD28 is about 12 degrees to the right and the Z series about the same amount to the left. If you bolt the Z to the LD the transmission will be tilted about 22 degrees to the right and the transmission rubber mount won't sit level and the shifter will be sticking into the passenger seat. If you unbolt the front case halves from both transmissions (12mm wrench and snap ring pliers needed) and swap the diesel one onto the Z24 5speed you will have converted it for use on a diesel motor. There are two technicalities that were up-grade improvements to the '85 transmission they may not be on the Maxima 5 speed. ONE/ The '85 720 5 speed will almost certainly have the larger 62mm counter shaft bearing on the front while the Maxima will likely have the older 56mm bearing. Because the bearing rides in a hole in the front case the diesel case will have a too small 56mm hole for the 720's large 62mm bearing. Simply use a gear puller and swap the smaller 56mm bearing onto the 720 counter shaft. TWO/ Along with the larger counter bearing the 720 transmission will also likely have the larger 16mm 1st/2nd shift rod. The front case has a hole that supports the front of the shift rod. The diesel case will have the smaller 14mm hole so just drill it out to fit. Roughly a 5/8" drill but measure. Remove cover plate bolts and loosen by hammering on the clutch pivot ball Collect any shims that fall out of the cover plate. The '85 will likely have the 62mm counter bearing in it. If you have to switch to the 56mm counter bearing use the diesel cover plate to match. Counter bearing is the bottom one. Before the case can be drawn off a snap ring on the input bearing (top) must be removed. The top one of the three shift rods on the left is the 1st/2nd. If you look carefully you'll see that the top one is slightly larger than the other two. Snap ring pliers are good for this or two screwdrivers... Remove the adapter plate to front case mounting bolts... Hammer the case forward and off... Both transmissions will look similar to this one.. Now you can compare the counter bearings and swap them with the case if necessary... . Quote Link to comment
carnuck
Sorry I meant LD28, not LD24 (fat fingers or wandering mind!) On another thought, will E4N71 from an 85 Maxima (L24 gas, RWD) automatic hook up with a married tcase, say from a Pathfinder? Quote Link to comment

On another thought, will E4N71 from an 85 Maxima (L24 gas, RWD) automatic hook up with a married tcase, say from a Pathfinder? The '85s were FWD (RL4F02A). :) If '83 or '84 they had an L4N71B 4 speed automatic, '82s were L3N71B 3 speed with locking torque converter and '81 and earlier were just 3N71B three speed automatics. Not totally sure about this: The E4N71B was used on VG powered 300zx and the '89 2wd Pathfinder. Earlier 2wds were just 3 speeds, maybe L3N71Bs. 4x4 Pathfinders used a newer 4 speed auto with lots of ECU emissions controlled shifting wiring and sensors.. Quote Link to comment

It's an '85 Maxima wagon (last of the rear wheel drives) I had an '84 before with the O/D auto Quote Link to comment
