Will it work? Is a custom driveshaft needed for it to drop in the 620?

The quick easy answer is no.

Yes it will bolt up to any 4 or 6 cyl. L series BUT .... The L series sits leaning over to the right in the engine bay. The KA (and also the Z series) are mounted mor vertically. If you use a KA tranny you would have to lean it over to the right to align the bolt holes on the L motor and the shifter would be over in the side of the passenger seat and the rear mount on the tranny would not be level to the crossmember.

The hard answer is to swap the front case half from 620 or 280z or zx 5 speed (some 4 speeds work too) onto the KA tranny. This will involve a trip to a machine shop to remove some internal metal around the front mainshaft bearing. The #1 / #2 shift rod hole must be drilled out from 14mm to 16mm and the 62mm KA counter shaft bearing pulled and a 56mm 620/280z/zx pressed on, OR while it is in the machine shop have them bore the countershaft bearing hole out to the larger 62mm size and you can use the KA bearin already on the transmission. If this tranny is from a 240sx you will almost certainly need to shorten the driveshaft to fit. All 240sx trannys use a speed sensor instead of a speedometer drive for a cable so you will need a proper drive pinion from a D21 truck in order to use your speedometer. The rear tranny mount will need modifying on the 620 to fit the FS5W71C from the 240sx.
