Rusty 78 Hatch

Recommended Posts

Been browsing these forums for months. Finally decided to post some pics. Getting another Datsun soon and I'll probably start a build thread with it. It's ok to giggle.

1978 510 Hatch/Stanza whatever, I love it. I put it in this section of the forum because I know everybody says it's not a real 510. Stock L20b and 5spd dogleg tranny. Stock everything basically.

No name coilovers in the front now, still need to lower the back. Painted it flat black for now. Don't like it to much, but anything is better than rust.

Rebuilding carb soon. Adjusted my valves with the help of mklotz70's video. I also replaced the fuel pump, battery, and the drivers side rear window. It was plexiglass when i got it.

I always love to see any of the less common Datsuns being saved. The later style 510 2-doors are cool, except for the bumpers, of course, the curse of all late '70s Datsuns.

When you said Rusty, I think you meant RUSTY! Wow! Makes me feel better about the moderate rust in all my cars. But if goes down the road, that is the important thing. Thinking of buying a wirefeed and fixing the rust, or keep it as a driver and not worry about it?

Great collection of pics, too. Thanks for posting.

Grinding most of the rust off, stopping it from spreading. Rolling it how it is. Maybe running aluminum sheets along the bottom of the car to cover holes, don't feel like patching it up lol. The bumpers came off because the only place the frame is rusted is where the bumper was attached. If I would have waited any longer it would have fallen off. BTW your 200sx is ugly/gorgeous. Ugly car but I just love it. It's so unique that it makes me want one haha.

I forgot to mention I like your new paint job. I may flat black my '72 510 when I get the door and fender replaced. At that point, I'll have a faded blue 510 with original green showing through, a white fender, and orange passenger's front door. Flat black over everything has to look better, even rattle canned.

Thanks for the kind words on the 200SX. There are 3, maybe 4, Ratsuners now with 1st gen SXs. You should join us. We plan to take over the world with SXs! LOL Where are you located? We might be able to find you one.

Western Washington, but my wife would be pissed if I bought another Datsun. She's beginning to like mine but still won't ride in it haha! She said I'm not allowed to have more than two Datsuns at a time. If I had it my way I'd be renting a small warehouse packed full of Datsuns and Datsun parts.

Tell your wife that Datsuns keeps you out of the bars n strip joints (even if it doesn't, tell her it does. Ha!). Or show her a pic of my SX, and tell her you want one of those. She might think your 510 looks a lot better. My wife rode in my SX just once around town. She never has asked again. Actually that is true of nearly everyone. One ride in my SX is most peoples limit!

I share your warehouse of Datsuns dream. But I also realize it is a good thing to have a wife to but a damper on the dream. I may not have all the Datsuns I want, but I do have a little money for food and gas.

So what is 2nd Datsun going to be for you? If she allows 2, better get another before she changes her mind. Then start a subtle campaign for a third - "Datsuns really don't take up much room. Way cheaper than a new car." That sort of logic.

The hope for the second Datsun is to be my DD. It has little rust, nothing I can't fix in a day. The carb is acting up in this hatch and I just haven't had time to rebuild it. If I had another car I wouldn't have to drive my wife to work in her car if mine wasn't running. That's another 45 minutes or so a day I could work on it. That and it's been raining and I don't have a garage, so it's hard to get a lot of work done.

My wife rode in my car once and hasn't wanted to since. She said if I get the rust fixed, the interior cleaned up, and made it run smoother, that she'd ride in it. I think she's lying haha. She was a little scared of my driving it too I think. Torquey little bastard! :D

Cool a 510 hatchback. Rarest of the series.

Yes, it is a real 510. It is model series A10, the succesor to the 710, the 2nd generation Nissan Violet. At the same time the 810 was successor to 510/610 so it was getting away from the 510 roots, which was the Datsun light car. The A10 was in spirit the real 510 as the 610 and 810 were going in a different direction.
