need advice

i have recently inherited a 78 datsun 510 and i live in california and was wondering to be the best course of action getting it smog ready.its been sitting in a garage for about a decade and i can already see that i need a new muffler and that its misfiring. should i even spend the time and money getting brand new smog pumps basically i need to know what i can do without

Jennifer's got it right.

OIC's or ban.

 

Don't go spending money on smog pumps until you know they're bad.

Fix muffler, and whatever is causing your miss.

 

Run it, see what happens.

 

In Oregon, we're able to run through DEQ at no cost. Pass or fail. You only pay for your tabs.

I don't know how it works in Cali though.

before you go buying smog crap...

 

1. drain all that shitty old gas out and put in a few gallons of fresh gas

 

2. put in new NGK plugs (dont cheap out on some shitty plugs, get the NGK)

 

3. change the oil and oil filter (use a Napa Gold or Nissan filter, and I recommend 10W30 non-synthetic oil)

 

5. change the distributor cap and rotor. also your points if you dont have an EI dizzy

 

6. change spark plug wires

 

7. set your valve lash

 

8. fire it up!

 

make sure your carb and choke are functioning and if its running fine check the timing

 

then report back lol

thanks for everything i did all the stuff you guys said except replacing the muffler the only thing now is i need a steering column but ive been unable to find one does anyone know where i could find one and what else can i do to make this bad-boy HAUL ASS!!!!!
