NiMB
OK so here goes... I have a 1976 280Z 2+2 I have been bringing back to life. Everything is done so far except the AC compressor. I have a new dryer/accumulator, fan, hoses, etc. My mechanic put new freon (the illegal stuff) in to see if the compressor was any good, it ran for about a minute and crapped out. When he pulled it out the model number shown SWP123-4G. All the places I called around say this doesn't show anything for a 76 280z but it does for a 260. Determined to find out what is going on I looked around more. I found this place that says that the correct parts listed as the MJ167-41, MJ167-41A, & MJ167-41B: http://www.discountacparts.com/partsdisplay~year~1976~make~Nissan~model~280Z.asp So I called them and they need the OE# from Nissan... so I call Nissan, I give them my VIN and they tell me the number 27630N4202 is the correct part number for the AC compressor for my car. I asked if they had more info then that and they said that is all they have listed under compressor info... so I call back doscountacparts.com and give them number and I also gave them the only other number off my compressor which is 6041910 ... they can't find anything that matches that but they can tell me the replacement they have listed works for the MJ167 series but I must now which MJ167I have. I don't have that! I have the SWP123-4G! Undeterred I look around some more and find this site and they have the SWP123-4G listed for the 76 280z as well: http://www.polarbearinc.com/PBPC/homepage/Search/Co/CO_Nissan.html#Anchor-280Z But this one says its for a 75: http://www.aircoparts.com/nissan-ac-compressors.html NOW I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED! Still not giving up my buddy directs me to: http://www.nostalgicairparts.com/air-conditioning/datsun-240z-260z-280z-compressor-upgrade-kit-623.php I said screw it and purchased it, but I have been waiting 3 weeks now as various parts for the kit are back ordered with no estimated time of order completion... pissed and now looking for alternate sourcing I decided to do some research and discovered that the compressor they sell is the Sanden 7H15 with the 4617 (the 4673 is heavy duty) clutch: http://www.sanden.com/originals/images/SD_Service_Guide_Rev.2.pdf http://www.polarbearinc.com/PBPC/homepage/Search/CL/CL_Dimen_Sanden.html#Anchor--C-63296 So I look all over for this and it seems the suppliers to all the various cookie cutter online AC parts stores have the part number listed for the aftermarket compressor as either for the MJ167 as 60-02262 RC or the MJ167-41A/B as 60-02264 RC as shown on the site (respectively): MJ-167: http://www.discountacparts.com/addtocart~year~1976~make~Nissan~model~280Z~descript~A-C_Compressor~part~60-02262.asp MJ-167-41A/B: http://www.discountacparts.com/addtocart~year~1976~make~Nissan~model~280Z~descript~A-C_Compressor~part~60-02264.asp Other sites have the same part numbers listed: http://www.onlineaccompressors.com/addtocart/1976_Nissan/280ZX/ShowAll/misc.html So now I am back to square one. Can anyone shed light on this? Quote Link to comment
Skib
I usually throw all that stuff away, sorry. Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
Based on the pics in the links, you probably have a standard run of the mill Sanden 507 or 508 compressor. These are very common on these era japanese cars and there also is a bunch of chinese knock offs of them. Mark Quote Link to comment
NiMB
I just remembered I downloaded the service manual a while back when I found it online. I looked up the chapter on AC and low and behold SWP123. Quote Link to comment
Dirk Diggler
what you have to do is take that 2+2, drive that fucker off a cliff, then buy a coupe. Problem solved  Quote Link to comment
NiMB
So much 2+2 hate... not helpful. 1 Quote Link to comment
Dirk Diggler
I'm just giving you shit man. 2+2s are different and not exactly my taste, but they're neat none the less. I would suggest going to a junkyard and either cross referencing numbers or just pulling one off to use Quote Link to comment
az240z
It's been my experience that any compressor that fit the 280z should work. bet if you went on zcar.com or hybirdz that you could find an excellent used one. Quote Link to comment
oakrun
the only difference i've seen between the mj series is the hoses are a little different. mounting points are all the same on the hitachi's. the mj167will fit. just swap your swp fittings onto this. swp's are getting hard to find.
