primo74620
I just put a new coil from Napa on my 620 pick up. How can I check the coil. I think it might be bad. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
You can test it as follows: Use an Ohmmeter (buy a $15 ohmmeter or $20 multi-meter at sears, or borrow one from a friend) 1. Primary (12V) Resistance @ 20C/68F temperature: 1.17 to 1.43 ohms This is measured from + to - terminals 2. Secondary (high voltage) Resistance @ 20C/68F temperature: 11,200 to 16,800 ohms This is measured from - terminal to center post (where the coil wire goes) 3. External Resistor (Ballast Resistor) @ 20C/68F temperature: 1.3 to 1.7 ohms Quote Link to comment

Also, on the secondary instruction, Do I go from the - terminal to the center post on the coil right? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, this is measured with the coil wires OFF (uninstalled). Quote Link to comment

primo74620
Ok, I checked the coil and everything worked out fine. I reinstalled the coil and checked if the coil had a spark(I disconnected the plug wire from the coil and held it close to the center post of the coil and had no spark) any more help would be greatly appreciated. banzai510(hainz)
Im lost on this one. You says it worked out fine then say no spark. is this points? or eleltronic ignition. is the points opening? I dont think coils go bad. as often as people make it sound. I would put the key to On and see if 12volts. make wire to minus side coil and make the other end of it bare. Now take the center coil wire place near chassis as you did before. Take the munus wire of the coil and ground it multipletimes. that center coil wire should fire. What your doing is making the minus wire your trigger everytime you ground it.Then you know coil is good and your points are grounding out or you have a electric ignition the the dizzy is bad or if remote box could be bad. or just losing a ground Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
or you can use a test light. Take the wire off at the distributor. put the aligator end on the connector there. then put the pointey end on the battery or the plus side coil. then try to start the car ythe light should flash. then you know your points are opening Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
compression spark fuel and it will fire. these things are old things wear out. get rid of the points once your sure you got the ignition back up and running. Quote Link to comment
