HELP... how do you replace the differential fluid (ln320)

can anyone help please. i am trying to get this truck all tuned up but i cant figure these last few details. i know how to work on vehicles but im not going to risk anymore trial and error with this truck and get it done right. i would reall appreciate the help

 

main question... how do you replace the rear differential oil?

- i assume is remove both plugs, let drain, plug bottom and fill...am i right?

- i don't want to remove the whole assembly... is there a way just to drain and fill?

 

also

 

what is a good transmission oil for the truck?

- i assume either manual tranny fluid or 10w-30 engine oil?

- im going off an 88 honda civic fluid chart but i am not sure this is correct.

 

 

and yes, this does sound remedial but i am new to the restoration business so if any of youz can help me out would be greatly appreciated

You are correct. With similar axles I've dealt with in the past:

 

1) unscrew both plugs, bottom and top

2) let all fluids drain out of bottom, then close up the bottom drain plug

3) fill the top plug until the fluids reach the plug and start spilling out

4) close up the top plug and you're all set.

 

 

I believe they a 1/2" drive ratchet should fit right onto the drain plugs.

80w-90 for the diff and 75w-90 for the tranny , do not use auto tranny fluid in your standard shift transmission, or motor oil for that matter (its called motor oil not transmission/motor oil)

Nissan recomends GL-5 only for differentials. GL-5 has a higher level of sulfates in it which protect the gear surfaces. 80 W 90 is fine.
