is the reverse light just like the speedo wire, alternating current instead of direct? or is it ground and one live? and there's also a gear selector sensor right? in theory I can setup a light to show what gear its in?

Some of the earlier KA24Es had a regular speedo pinion and cable. Later ones had an electronic sensor and just wires to the speedo, and maybe the ECU.

In this picture, just forward of the shifter with the Blue covering is the neutral switch. Just below it's plug is the white plastic cap over the speedometer drive pinion. Truck KAs used a regular drive with cable to the dash. All car KAs and trucks from '94 on used an electric sensor. Either type will fit in here.

The next one forward and slightly down it the over drive (5th) gear switch.

The next one forward is the reverse light switch

Note: Some trannys had a 'top gear switch' located generally just behind the reverse light switch. What it is or does... ???
