my brother in law has a 280z been sitting for a while runs fine after warmed up but when first started a shit load of steam comes out the tail pipe with that sweet coolant smell other than a blown head gasket what else would cause water in the cylinder

well thank you tore the engine apart and found a cracked cylinder wall

That's a very rare occurrence. This is the first one I have ever heard about. The block might crack between bolt holes and water jacket. Did the block freeze maybe?

that is pretty rare for it to crack like that though
