sick620
I took my truck to a mechanic today to get the timing adjusted. He adjusted It and told me Im over heating because of a intake gasket and carb gasket leak. He said its taking in too much air. Is he correct In saying this can damage my engine? 72240z
Yes imho, taking in air after the carb leans the mixture and leaner = hotter. You can check for those leaks yourself by spraying carb cleaner or starter fluid etc around the area. If your idle changes there is a substantial leak. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
A vacuum leak would have to be small or it wouldn't idle. Once revved up the leak would be inconsequential. If severely lean the porcelain around the center electrode on the plugs will be WHITE , not white but WHITE. Power will suffer too and the peddle will have to be pushed further to the floor. Pull and check the plugs. If they are white you may have a small blockage in the primary jet causing a lean condition. If a normal tan your good. Retarded timing will cause more of the fuel/air to be still burning as it goes out the exhaust port which will transfer heat to the cooling system through the port wall. Is your vacuum advance and mechanical advance working???? Remove cap and suck on the vacuum line to the dizzy and see that the plate rotates clockwise. Quote Link to comment
