TeKKiE
Hey all! Friend recommended I come here from another forum (sr20-forum.com). Background in a nutshell: I have a 400+ whp '98 SE-R as a daily/toy, and am completely infactuated with Nissan/Datsun. My other daily is a 2005 Armada SE. Anyhow, I recently picked up a 1984 Datsun Maxima wagon (910 or 810, im still not sure?), for $500 from my grandfather. It ran up until 2005 when he could no longer see well enough to drive it. It sat under a tree in the front yard until this last weekend. It needs a deep cleaning, paint, and the motor I'm sure needs to be freshened up. Gas is at least 4 years old, oil is likely the same. I didn't even attempt to start it lol! I haven't really decided whether to pull the drivetrain and swap something moe familiar (SR) or if I should keep the L series and bore/stroke/build it up and keep it N/A. Needs suspension for sure, though! Best part about the car: no cancer on the body, and only has 87K miles :D I'll post pics when I get to a computer, it'll take forever to copy links over from the iPhone. -TeK Quote Link to comment

TeKKiE
Well I'm stuck in traffic on the NJ turnpike (coworker's driving) and copied links from photobucket mobile. :) Quote Link to comment
fisch
Neat. Look forward to watching you turn a tight, granny grocery getter into a sexy beast! Hey what's is that car witht the white walls hiding in the garage? Quote Link to comment

Hey what's is that car witht the white walls hiding in the garage? Thanks for the welcome :). The blue car in the garage is another car I'm likely to own in the future. It's my moms at present time. Anyhow, it's a 1950 Studebaker, all original with less than 65K on the odo. :). Everything works flawlessly! Quote Link to comment
TeKKiE
Thought I'd post a picture of the beast ;) Quote Link to comment
Cuts metal like mad
Welcome, cool car. The SR may be more familar, but with your introduction to a new project, maybe an introduction to a 'new' (old really) powerplant is in order. I wouldn't bother with the L24e thats in there, other than just to drive it for a bit. Best motor 'bolt' in would be the 280zx turbo L28et. (you asked for opinions this is mine) Would be pretty cool to have the stock steel wheels widened and keep the spoked wheel covers too! Quote Link to comment

The idea of the ET is nice, but I think I'm going to keep this N/A for now. I think I remember reading about some people stroking their L28's to 3.1L and making some pretty serious power? I don't really care for it to be "fast" like my SE-R, just faster than stock :D Quote Link to comment

I don't really care for it to be "fast" like my SE-R, just faster than stock :D the L28 can be bored and stroked to 3.1L with 89mm (KA24) pistons early L24 9mm rods, and a diesel maxima V07 crank. Be warned tho, strokers are not cheap to build, the crank will cost you a pretty penny. 3.1L turbos (with all the other necessary mods) are making 500-600HP Quote Link to comment
TeKKiE
If NA is your flavor, stay away from SR. :D If I did in fact do an SR, it would be an SR20VE bored to 2.3L ;). High revving monster with ITB :D thanks for the info on the stroked setup, skib! What's a ballpark price on the crank itself? Guess I could keep it to an L28. I need to do some research on pistons and rods to determine what other options I have. I REALLY think a 3.1L i6 w/ itb's would be pretty sick! Oh, and Im NOT a dorifto, nor do I ever plan to drift. :) no offense to you drifters :D Quote Link to comment
Skib
ballpark for a crank thats just been pulled out of some block is going to be ~$600-$700 sometimes you can find them cheaper and sometimes there more. I REALLY think a 3.1L i6 w/ itb's would be pretty sick! check out the L6 section of HybridZ.org, if you can think of it, its been done. ie: 3.1L stroker, twin turbo, with custom made DOHC head made from cut up KA24de heads, pushing about 600hp. TeKKiE
Thanks. I've done some digging on HybridZ.org as well as some other Z oriented sites. If the diesel Max crank is that rare/expensive, I'll probably just stick with getting an L28 and figuring out how tweak it to my likings. :) Quote Link to comment
greybeard
Remember, RWD maxima has a front sump oilpan, l-28 is rear sump. pick up-tube will not interchange.. so you'll have to extend/fab up a pick-up tube Quote Link to comment

Are there any clearance issues that would require me to use an l24 pan on an l28 in the maxima? I'm strongly considering just swapping in the l28e with some higher CR goodies and whatnot, but finding parts seems to be my weak point at the moment. I really don't want to drop an SR in it, either. I don't have time to build another at the moment. Quote Link to comment
greybeard
The Maxima X-member is for a front sump pan, Maxima L24 uses a front sump. an L-28 is rear sump. and IIRC the 2.4 pick up tube bolts to the block in a diffrent location than an L28, so the L28 tube will not just bolt on, a custom tube needs to be made. in all a very small problem, and easy to overcome. I say, drop in a Turbo L-28, freshen/tighten the suspension, lower that wagon a couple of inches, nice old school small air dam, Tint the windows a some fresh paint, 15" ZX turbo wheels, and you have one sweet ride. OH yea.... and a 5sp. x-over!! I want to see a build thread... Edited December 2, 2009 by greybeard Quote Link to comment

I already have a turbo ride, hence the want to keep this one N/A :) If I were considering FI, I have around 4 complete SR20DET's to build from in a garage. Quote Link to comment
greybeard
Just my opinion on the turbo, but what I was saying is ALL the Z L-motors are going to have the wrong Pan to drop into a Maxima. It really is not a problem, the correct pan will bolt on, just have to make up an extended pick up tube. a N/A L-28 will make a nice upgrade. Quote Link to comment
