Drfixit
I have checked the compression in my L18 and get 1- 135 2- 160 3- 160 4- 160 I use about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. No leaks and it doesn't smoke that I can see, however, if I get on the gas real hard I can smell something weird that almost smells like burning oil. The previous owner supposedly bought a new rebuilt engine less than 30,000 ago but you know how that goes. What do I do next to find out if its rings, valves or ? Thanks, Mark Quote Link to comment
Bugeye
do a cylinder leak down test, but looking at your compression on the #1 cylinder you could have bad rings or a stuck valve a leak down test can confirm that. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
#1 is bad. Put a few drops of oil in each spark plug hole and a take another reading. If #1 comes up, it is bad rings. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Place some cardboard under it at night, and check in the morning or at the end of the weekend for drips.. Quart in 1000 isn't much and not likely you will notice the smoke or dirty plugs. Quote Link to comment

I forgot about putting oil down the spark plug hole......damn and I just finished my engine performance class Quote Link to comment
Drfixit
So the old oil in the plug hole trick huh......If the compression comes up its the rings and if it doesnt its probably the valves??? If it is the rings it doesnt make sense to do just one cylinder does it, might as well pull it out and rebuild it, that way I know for sure what I have for an engine:D Quote Link to comment
Bugeye
since you have it apart i would do them all Quote Link to comment
