  1. Well I feel a little bit like I just got my first prescription for viagra but…I am back in business. Yep, I put a Weber on it. @banzai510(hainz) claims another victim. Anyway running great. Thanks for the help troubleshooting this problem everyone, feeling a little guilty I took the easy way out. But feeling GREAT that the truck runs pretty well now… …except for the brakes AGAIN and now the horn honks whenever I hit the right turn switch but…those will be fun problems to solve.
  2. I peeked at the secondary and it’s a 155. Not that my carb is a reliable source of information.
  3. Yes matching coil. Yes bypassed. I think I gapped at 0.042 Interesting, I could be wrong but I think in this DAF model carb (pretty sure that's what I have) I don't have a power valve? Is there an equivalent? Yes I won't obsess on the condition or my gas mileage but I would like to run more fine than it's running now.
  4. Sounds like 115 is a little high on the jet, especially since I’m at 2,700 ft, though not sure if it’d be a significant contributor to the issue? Though, strangely the PO lived at 4,200 ft so…huh?
  5. @Stoffregen Motorsports Plugs look…dark and dull for the most part except for cyl 3 which is not looking great, pretty oily I guess. They are smelling pretty gassy though. Maybe things are pointing to rich? As near as I can tell in my attempts to cut the engine whenever the stumble was happening and pull over real quick the float bowl was dead on the line. But considering it “recovers” perhaps I’m just too slow to catch it? @datzenmikeI got the jet out and sprayed it clear. Couldn’t tell there was any blockage but who knows. It’s a 115, fwiw. I will put this back together, put in some new plugs and run it and see what happens and then what the plugs look like later. @banzai510(hainz) thanks about the distributor. I wasn’t sure cause of the swap to EI needing all the different pedestal, plate, etc. plus the distributor dropped in clocked differently than the original so didn’t know how all that would add up. Plenty of adjustment left for timing though. I’m at 12 BTDC now as that’s what I read for L18. Sounds like that’s prob not my problem though so will keep digging thru carb.
  6. Okay got it. Thank you for clarifying the distributor possibility. Didn’t want to keep barking up the carburetor tree if that wasn’t it. I’ll see what’s up with that jet. Thanks!
  7. Okay so I’ve read the last 10 years of posts on the matter, most of which are never resolved, or are resolved by the blessing of the Pope and a miracle occurring…so I need some direction I have a stumble, sputter, bog, that occurs when I hit the gas on take off in 1st, and in 2nd, not above second though. Have the stock Hitachi on an L18. If I stay on the gas, I “get through” it and drive away. It seems like wisdom dictates this may be related to: -accel pump -jet blockage -vac leak -distributor? Dunno what else? So I replaced the accel pump recently and have robust stream of fuel for full stroke of pump (old one was floppy and tore up). Passages seem clear by way of carb cleaner squirting through, but this is the one and only carb I’ve ever worked on so what do I know? I opened plugs for main jets and squirted carb cleaner through there (appeared to come out somewhere in the throat— so, clear not blocked?) One thing I don’t understand about the possible distributor off a tooth as a possible cause is if that’s something you “get through” simply by staying on the gas? Seems like not, but I’m a noob so I don’t understand why this is always suggested as a possible cause. Timing at idle is spot on, at least. Either way, yes I’ve replaced the distributor to go to EI. Could have screwed that up? Would like to understand how that could relat though. So where do I go next? Keep cleaning passages all over again? Take out main jets and clean those directly? Hunt down vacuum leaks? Uhh dare I say get a Weber? (No I’m not ready for that!) Thanks for any guidance.
  8. @datzenmike I see you have the fruiting body of a Nissan air cleaner fungus growing wild in your yard. I have that problem too. You can dig them up all you want, but they always come back.
  9. Thinking of doing the wood floor too. I’m hoping to pounce on someone’s cast off flooring from the free section of Craigslist as I see from time to time or we’ve got one of those second hand building materials stores around here that often has excess flooring for dirt cheap…Datsun bed all of what 27 square feet? Easily someone’s leftovers.
  10. Exhaust collector gasket solved—no studs broken! WOW it is so quiet now haha. I can’t believe my ears. However I was motivated to put in a brake proportioning valve since I was locking up the rears after doing the dual m/c and now I’m having a hard time bleeding the rear circuit now so I’m thinking I have a big bubble stuck or have a little air seep or something. I dunno but it’s a bit annoying to not have brakes and have everything else working pretty good!
  11. Evidently I’m missing the gasket at the exhaust flange. Might explain the volume of the motor (loud)? Oh well can’t wait to snap those studs off!
  12. First time I fired up my 521 I was treated to a laser beam of oil shooting out of the cracked plastic line all over my driveway. Of course I replaced it with the same type of line but…that’s because the sender I got from autozone was the wrong thread. Maybe you’ve got me rethinking it.
  13. Extended test drive. Hot damn we are runnin and drivin guys. The weird stall-out issue I guess was a little bit solved by a new accel pump and a little bit solved by a heavier right foot, oh and maybe the adjustment to the clutch slave—who knows—all three helped! Definitely gotta get used to the sounds and revs, but seems like she pulls strong if you lay into it a little more than I’d think. Needs a little adjustment on the brakes and also the shifter boot is impeding the shifting it gets so bound up but after that…TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES.

    WINDSHIELD

Yeah I’ve got a nice cloudy delaminating bubbly thing going on, looks like I’m either underwater or in a cloud of smoke, plus a nice long crack makes me pretty keen on a new windshield. Ooh okay cool! I’ll check that option out!

    WINDSHIELD

So about $600 after shipping? I guess they have us over a barrel. Would be neat be able to see out of the truck I suppose..
  16. I found doing a double layer of marine vinyl smoothed any remaining divots nicely and gave a good amount of pad, if only because I didn’t want to buy any padding and had the extra vinyl laying around.
  17. Dang seems like everyone has dusted off the Datsun these days! Still a little wintry here but I made some time to put in some carpet, get a steering wheel in and do a headliner. only several hundred dozen things left to knock out!
  18. Awesome thanks for those specs! Right, the coilovers—well looks great. I’d be getting ahead of myself talking about lowering and proper wheels but it can’t hurt to daydream right?
  19. I dig the whole stance of your truck. What’s that wheel size/tire combo + lowering situation you have going on? Those wheels are the perfect spacing especially. I know I know I could read through the previous 200 pages and find out (and I probably have and forgot).
  20. A beauty! Hey I saw this truck for sale, glad someone bought it. Congrats. The experts will chime in about upgrades, but I was impressed with how good stopping power you can get out of the drum brakes. I replaced everything brake-wise on my 521 but kept it all drum. New drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and a dual circuit master. It stops very well when in good adjustment. May be a different story if you think you’ll be driving this truck on ice…I’m not that brave!
  21. Alright alright re set and added some copper cote to the gaskets around the spacer to the intake and slapped it all back together and now things are idling smoothly!
  22. Good to know! Pretty sure I will just go this route. I actually felt like I made a giant improvement in the shifter play with the shim I added before I broke the ear off so I feel better about the ol 4-speed. No chance in hell I’m getting on the freeway in my heap!
  23. Ah yeah looked you’d have to take the tail off to get to it anyway right? Good idea. I’ll see what’s around, usually not much. Either way you’d have to drop the whole thing though right? Well if I come up empty or things get shaky with the single ear I’ll let you know, thanks! How’d you score that? Seems like an obscure part to run across. I was a tiny little bit considering this a sign I should do a 5 speed swap but there’s no doubt that’s a little ambitious for me. I think I at least gotta do a clutch and a rear main seal sometime so more or less I’ll have the opportunity to make it count if I get to fixing it.
