I'm in a similar situation. It's a bit labor intensive, but this is what I've done in the past:

Drain and drop the tank

Remove the sender

Block off any openings with plastic bags/foil and duct tape (leave the filler neck open)

Put a couple gallons of water inside with about 6 ft of chain

Roll and swish the tank around to get the chain to break up all the crap

Empty the water and do it again

Maybe a third time, by now one of your 'plugs' has probably started leaking

Buy a tank recoat kit (JC Whitney, NOT Kreem)

Dry the tank out

Cover up the openings again

Pour the coating in and swish it around to cover the whole inside

Take off the covers (inspect if you can see inside)

Do it again if needed

Let it dry

Reinstall any fittings and the sender

Put it back in the rig

Yeah, it takes a couple of days to do it right. You could always drain it and pull it and take it to the nearest radiator shop. They usually 'tank' gas tanks too, for a nominal fee. Some of them even recoat.

Good luck.
