Printed circuits on the back of a gauge cluster usually have studs that you can hook onto and supply power and ground.

 

These pics are just for reference, but the first one illustrates how if you know where the power in wire is, you can follow that circuit to all the places it goes and test it along the way.

Oh, and the bulbs are removalbe, so if you take them out, you can test them that way. I usually replace all of them when I have a gauge cluster out. Those small bulbs on an old Datsun are really dim, and you can almost always find brighter ones that fit right into the original socket. Go to your auto parts store with a bulb and then look thorugh the stuff on the rack, looking for one with more watts.
