Ask yourself do you drive primarily in town or highway. If in town a 5 speed won't get much use. Just saying...

A Z car 5 speed will work but there are lots of others. All L series 4 or 6 cylinders can share their transmissions. (though some are not advised) Your '77 4 speed is a 71B transmission the 5 speed is also a 71B so physically identical and will fit without any mods. What ever 5 speed you get make sure you use your clutch 4 speed release bearing collar, it's intimately matched to your pressure plate. The 5 speed may come with it's own collar but no telling what clutch it's mated to so use the one from the 4 speed.

'77-'78 280z mid ratio

'79 280zx mid ratio

'80-'83 non turbo 280zx close ratio

'77-'78 620 mid ratio

'79 620 wide ratio

'78-'84 810/Maxima gas engine mid ratio

'80 720 2wd wide ratio

Personally I wouldn't use the close ratio in a heavy truck, just my opinion. If you live in town it has a very high over drive and would get even less use. The mid ratio is perfect and what the '77 had optionally. The wide ratio is also good.

You may find that a 280z and early 280zx Z car 5 speed commands a higher price, because Z car! Be assured that the other mid ratio 5 speeds are identical.
