Jitenshakun
Has anyone done it? I've got a dog of a Z24 (everything checks out short of a full tear down) and all the core parts for a LZ23 in the garage. I can rotate the whole package (i have the engine mounts and tranny) and with a 620 brake booster should be able to fit an intake and fueling. The big questions are: 1. The oil pan 2. The exhaust manifold Does anyone have any experience with swapping the carbie to the drivers side in a 4WD? TIA... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You are making basically a stroker L2.3 with L head and intake/exhaust and an L series transmission using a bored out Z22 block. Correct? A 4x4 oil pan will need to be custom made. 1980. First year for the 720 4x4 and the last year for the L20B. 1980 only, the front differential was on the right side of center and the oil pan bulged to the left side. From '81 on, the 720 front differential switched to the left side of center and all Z series oil pans bulged to the right side. There just is no L20B oil pan that will fit the '81 and up 720. You'll have to fabricate something with a bulge to the right to clear the front differential. Quote Link to comment
Jitenshakun
D'oh! For the header can I use the stock 4x4 one and fit something custom to the end of it or am I looking at a custom header as well? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If this is going to be an L series 2.3 then use the L20B exhaust manifold. If you have to use a header get one for a 1980 720 4x4 as they had L20B engines. Quote Link to comment
Jitenshakun
Z22 block. L20b head. L20B 4X4 exhaust manifold. That should be easy enough to find... Edited December 13, 2021 by Jitenshakun Typo Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I think all L20B exhaust manifolds are the same two styles, round and square port. It's easier to make one style and bend the down pipe to match it. The Z series engines have the exhaust on the same side so just weld together. 1 Quote Link to comment
