To drain the ATF fluid...do you have to remove the pan?

You could change it without removing the oil pan by vacuuming it out the filler pipe. But why? If replacing the fluid it would be more than wise to replace the transmission oil filter which is just as old. You can usually get a kit which includes the filter and the pan gasket. While the oil pan is off the brake band can be adjusted to spec.
