It is a five speed, but I would like to know what from so I can order some seals for it and such. Please let me know if more pics are required. Thanks! Looks like 7104989 stamped on top. datzenmike Posted April 6, 2016 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 It's an L series five speed made before '80, so that narrows it down to the '77-'79 620 truck, the '77-'78 280z, the '79 280zx or the 810. Can't see the right (passenger's) side but no neutral switch so not an 810. Could be a non Californian '77 620 or a 280z or the one year 280zx. Picture would help slightly. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike Posted April 6, 2016 Report Share Posted April 6, 2016 Maybe a front seal, definitely a $4 rear seal. The pre '80 transmissions are pretty much all the same. I would guess a '77 so not a zx could be a 620 or a 280z 5 speed. Both were a mid ratio box. Quote Link to comment

So far i got thats an L series. And i believe that the speedo is at a 6oclock. ive also tried looking for information with these numbers that i found on the transmission but no luck . #3 , 15, @47, 7422286 and 41110 . thanks again ratsun Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted April 20, 2016 Report Share Posted April 20, 2016 L series 5 speed Made '80 or after (has reverse check sleeve) Either an '80 810, '81'-'84 Maxima or '80-'83 non turbo 280zx. This can be narrowed down by placing in first gear, marking the input and output spline, and then turning the input 20 times while counting the output turns. 20 input... 6 output..... could be 810 or Maxima, both transmission were virtually the same.. 6.5 turns.... '80-'83 280zx. This can be narrowed down to '80 OR '81-'83 with another 'test'. But wait and see what you get first. Quote Link to comment
10floro Posted April 20, 2016 Report Share Posted April 20, 2016 Hello there same problem. I have a 1600 or in the us a 510 here in germany. Problem is on the higway the thing is screaming like hell. So a 5 speed gearbox would be nice. Unfortunatly there is hardly anything to find in germany or around here. Im searching for a 280 ZX gearbox since at least 8 month. So now there came a gearbox up witch i could buy. but im not sure if this thing would fit on my L16. The gearbox is markt with RP71C#1 They guy says it fits a 280 ZX so in my understanding it would fit on the L16 as well ? Sorry for the pure english Regards Florian Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted April 20, 2016 Report Share Posted April 20, 2016 Hi Florian, welcome to Ratsun. For the transmission to fit the 510 without modifying the drive shaft length it must be 26" long. (66mm) There were no zx transmissions that length, they were 31.5" or 80mm. Posts # 9,10,11,12 above are similar in looks to a zx 5 speed. If you can get pictures of it, post them. Often sellers don't know what they are selling, or only what someone else has told them. Quote Link to comment

What do you mean marking both input and output spline. Like with a marker. If so your saying 20 input turns will = to 6 or 6.5 output turns. Is it as easy as it sounds. datzenmike Posted April 20, 2016 Report Share Posted April 20, 2016 Anything that's easily seen. Used to use 'white out' for typewriters but no-one uses typewriters any more, it's all computer now. A dab of white paint... whatever. Do both in and out at the 12 o'clock or top position and start turning. You do this and you're on your way to being an expert. BTW the engine may sound like it going to blow up but nothing is farther from the truth. Sixty MPH (100K) is only about 3K RPMs on the 510. The red line for the L series engine is over twice that. I have my tranny (the first one posted at the top) at the shop for cleaning, new seals, getting the flywheel turned, and replacing two worn out shift forks. Other than that I'm told everything looks good inside. They said they found a clutch for me, but they priced it at $230, which sounds a bit extreme to me. I did a search on Craigslist and lo and behold I found the following: "New pressure plate, clutch disk, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, and guide tool. This will fit a 1977-1981 Datsun 200SX, 1978-1981 Datsun 510, 1974-1977 Datsun 710." Based on the info ya'll have provided about my transmission does it sound like this would work? He only wants $50. Ask what make it is and the clutch disc diameter (should be 200mm) ask for pictures, should be shiny clean and best if still in the original box. If the clutch bolted on to the bumper I would take a chance for $50. The clutch is not easy to get at and requires the transmission to be removed to get at it. Raise the vehicle, remove driveshaft, cross member, speedo cable, shifter, clutch slave..... see what I mean ? and we haven't even started to unbolt the transmission yet. The clutch is something you want to work reliably for a long time. 1 Quote Link to comment
