guyster
I just cracked open my Prothane box and the bushing doesn't fit. It's noted on Z-Parts site that it won't fit '68 or '69, but I have a '71. Still ... now I need to either change control arms (which I don't want to do) or find the right bushing. Any guidance? guyster
I'm now reviewing this thread http://community.ratsun.net/topic/43578-lower-control-arm-bushing-advice/ I'm seriously thinking of sanding the bushings down by attaching them to a drill press (hillbilly lathe). Anyone else have experience doing this? Quote Link to comment
70 goon
Have you pulled the sleeve from inside the control arm? Quote Link to comment
guyster
Have you pulled the sleeve from inside the control arm? I have not. Are you going to tell me that the bushing will fit if I pull the sleeve? (I really don't want to pull that sleeve as everything I read says it's a time-consuming pain in the ass). I also noticed that RockAuto has sleeved LCA bushings that are OEM looking (outer sleeve, rubber, inner sleeve). I guess if I'm going to pull the sleeve, I could just buy that replacement. 70 goon
Yes the bushing will fit if you pull the sleeve. Just cut it lengthwise and drift it out. Its not that hard to do. 2 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Either pull the sleeve or turn the bushing down. 1 Quote Link to comment
Just Joel
Pull the sleeve... Not hard at all. Remove the blade from a hack saw and thread it through the bushing eye. Cut through the sleeve and knock the split sleeve out with a punch and hammer. Done Quote Link to comment
guyster
Part of my problem is laziness in that I have blasted, painted and clear coated the arms and don't want to redo that work. I will redo the work if I need to, but I am very curious if removing a few mm's from the bushing (by lathe) is a viable option. Sounds like it is, but I wonder if doing so will have a negative affect on the bushing or suspension. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
If its a poly bushing it won't hurt anything turning it down. Cutting the sleeve and removing it won't require you to reblast and paint the arm, the bushing surface should be bare metal anyway. 1 Quote Link to comment
guyster
Cool Q; it's a poly bushing. See you on the 19th! Quote Link to comment
q-tip
You're only taking about .100" off of the diameter. The bushing is only there to take up the extra space, the poly ones dont do much for vibration dampening anyway. 1 Quote Link to comment
