Datsun Fumigation Services / fired up my a14 after 20 years

So I work on alot of things at once, and only get to the Datsun now and then. But finally yesterday I finished installing the new-to-me used Hitachi carb on my '80 210's a14. Fuel pump/tank issues were finally sorted out as well, and as it cranked i watched the gasoline splash into the carb through its little peep window. Then, the engine started on gas for the first time since about 1993.

Two bad things happened. First, the car immediately generated a massive cloud of thick white smoke, filling my yard and the street. You couldn't see ten feet through it. Even after running the engine for only 30 seconds, there was enough smoke to kill or run off every mosquito over a whole city block. The cloud slowly spread out and even more slowly floated towards the crowded restaurant across the street, which does have a patio, and it sort of hung around there for a while like a foul-smelling bum. I was pretty sure one of those people was going to call the fire department. Well I'm a vegetarian and don't like smelling the crap they pump out all the time, so I guess I got them back. But I'm not enough of a jerk to have enjoyed it, so I packed up my stuff and figure I'll try again when the restaurant is closed.

The other bad thing that happened is that the engine had runaway acceleration. A quick manual pump of the accelerator made no difference, the engine was already running flat out. What is that about? I tried to hook up all the vaccum tubes and stuff, but it's likely I got some of that wrong. I just have the distributor hotwired due to some shorts in the stock wiring, so there was no power to the electric choke or whatever that wire is supposed to go to.

I spent about 20 minutes searching the board and reading up on Hitachi carb adjustment, and consulted with Mr. Chilton as well. I'm a newb, and am still pretty clueless as to what to do about the white smoke and the acceleration, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks-

One other thing can cause white smoke, bad valve seals, if you added oil to the engine before starting it, oil could have went though the old dried up, cracked valve seals, that will certainly create a cloud, and it doesn't go away fast, as you have to burn that oil off/out of the cylinders, it can actually smoke bad for quite a while, several minutes.

My old engine in the work truck was worn out, it had a lot of blow-by, and the valve seals were wore out also, when I added to much oil in the morning, it would blow a white cloud so large it was embarrassing.

Thanks guys, I do see that there are some pretty big vacuum leaks where the various emissions hoses have rotted away. Can I just plug all that stuff up and be happy?.. or are there some emissions components that I really need to make the car fuel efficent? I don't know how the emissions gear works, or even what most of it is, and like alot of people I'm inclined to get rid of things that I don't understand.

As for the smoke, I did soak the cylinders for a long time with Marvel Mystery Oil, would that do it? And yes I did give the engine a fresh oil change that then sat their for a couple of years..
