beardical
hey guys, name's eliza. i am absolutely terrible at introducing myself. i'm out in tucson, az, two dudes out here referred me to ratsun and i have no clue what their usernames on here are but i'm sure they'll see this and find me and whatnot. i picked up a '71 240z yesterday, and i'm literally just now getting into the datsun scene after a good long stint with an old bimmer. boom, z car! I'll put up more pictures when I'm home from work. had to reset the dizzy timing to get her to start (which was a success), now the carbs need to be tuned. also need to figure out the idling issue (car dies after about 45 seconds). I'm not sure what else to say haha hi! :D Quote Link to comment
PrimeLuxeZ
Thats good enough man, Ratsun doesn't ask for much. Post some more pics of it and what are your plans on it? Quote Link to comment
beardical
pictures are kinda crap-- at least from a photographer's perspective haha. as far as I know this is factory interior, although I've been told that it's been refurbished (and I wouldn't doubt it, it's in decent condition, save for the dying red shag carpeting). I should probably get more pictures of the engine bay. a previous owner swapped an L28 with dual SU carbs. I fixed the timing (with the help of my friend Kevin). she starts right up without missing a beat, but idles REALLY high and I have fuel spilling out of the sides of my carbs. any ideas on what that might be? I'm most likely taking out the interior, rockin no carpet, and putting a set of brown leather seats that Talyn (I think his username is That One Guy) has in the garage. as far as future plans for the car go, I'll probably take it step by step. get it as reliable as I possibly can first, swap out the interior, wire up my headlights (gauges work, lights don't), and go from there. I really like the shakotan/bozo style. Quote Link to comment
Ratwagon1600
Welcome! Need more info on the fuel spillage. Vent from the top of the fuel bowl, small diameter fuel feeder hose at the bottom? Etc etc If you can post some pics of where you think the fuel leak is coming from it will help with a keyboard diagnosis. Quote Link to comment
beardical
these aren't my carbs, but I'm at work and can't take a picture of my actual car right now haha. but where I circled in red is where fuel is leaking. Quote Link to comment
Ratwagon1600
My money is on the Main jet seals (possibly), or poorly aligned/seated jets. This may also explain the issue of the Idling dying after a short while though this could be attributed to other things like crap in the fuel bowl, float(s) leaking, poor fuel pressure etc. My suggestion (as long as the car isn't your DD) is to start by taking the carbs off and rebuild them. SU's can be a fickle thing so if you don't have experience with them, try and get some one to help you. Quick edit. Have a look at this link, it will give you some good background info on what to check with these carbs. http://www.jetlink.net/~okayfine/su/rebuild.html Time for me to get some sleep, have to be at work in 3 hours :( Quote Link to comment
beardical
well the goal with this car was DD haha. I have a tendency to pick up cars that need work and not have something to drive in the meantime. I work at a shop so it's never really a big deal if something needs work though. I guess these are the carbs off of Kevin's Z (s30kid) that he later gave to Talyn (That One Guy) and are now in my possesion. the two of them are currently fiddling with my car while I'm at work to confirm whether or not I need a rebuild. thanks for the suggestion! beardical
Still having vacuum leak issues. Did a spray down test and RPMs shot up when I sprayed ether near my thermostat housing. I'm gonna pick up a new intake mani gasket today, as well as a spacer for my fuel pump as I think that might also be an issue. Quote Link to comment
