jdub
Is this the stock shifter for this truck? The shift knob looks like it might be a Z-car knob. This is a 78 620 pickup with a 5 speed. [/url]">http:// Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I was going to say the dust boot looks like from a Z car, maybe a zx? I think truck shifters tend to be very slightly longer. The '77-'78 620 truck 5 speed is identical to the '77-'78 280z car 5 speed with only the shifter being a different shape/length. Quote Link to comment
jdub
datzenmike, if this is what you think it is, will a motorsport auto shortshifter fit if that trans? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No idea. You could just cut it shorter and thread the end. A short shifter will be harder to shift as mechanical advantage (leverage) is lost. If you have to lean forward to shift or to reach the shift lever in any gear, then it is way too short. You should be seated comfortably arm slightly bent. The later ('80 and on) 280zx transmissions had the fulcrum point on the shifter about 1/2 inch higher which shortened the throw without shortening the shifter itself. Quote Link to comment
jdub
Ill get under the truck to see what the trans number is, where is the number located? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There's nothing on it to tell what it's out of. You can visually narrow it down. '78 was the second year the 5 speed was an option so likely that's a '78 truck 5 speed. Yes it could have been a 4 or a 5 speed and had any L series 5 speed swapped in, no way to easily tell. Pre '80s shift pin location... (likely this is yours) Post '80 shift pin location A quicker way yo see if you have a pre '80s transmission is to look at the speedo cable where it exits the tailstock. The speedo pinion is retained by a bolt and key with the bolt at the 12 o'clock location on pre'80s After '80 the bolt was moved to 6 o'clock. . Quote Link to comment
