datzenmike
If you don't know when the oil was changed last... and most owner don't.... maybe time to change it. It is supposed to be changed every 30K or so. You want GL-4 80 w 90 weight. It's getting hard to find this stuff but whatever you do, do NOT use GL-5 in your transmission. You need an oil the is marked "yellow metal safe" or "compatible with copper or brass" Qty...... 1.7 liters or 3 5/8 US pints or 3 Imperial pints for the 521 4 speed. The fill hole on the F4W63 is on the driver's side (left) I use about 3 feet of old garden hose. Stick one in the transmission and the other in the engine bay behind the air filter. Use a kitchen funnel from a dollar store. Pour in at least 1 1/2 pints and then start watching the other end. When oil starts to dribble out put the bung back in and tighten it up. Wipe the bung clean and check in a few days to see if wet and leaking. Quote Link to comment
mjja
Thank you so much. Also I think that its also the similar process for the rear differential right 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
For the differential you have to use GL-5 90W. Differential oil contains more anti scuff additives that cannot be used in the transmission because it corrodes the brass synchros. Both the transmission and the differential drain bungs are on the bottom and both contain a magnet to collect metal particles. Wipe them off so you know how much was collected since this oil change. A fine black paste is normal. Quote Link to comment
mjja
Thank you! Im going to change the fluids tomorrow Quote Link to comment
darrel
loosen the fill plug first to make sure you can fill it back up. Quote Link to comment
mjja
Okay thanks also I can't find Gl 4 80 90 but I found Gl 4 85 95 and a bottle that says GL 4 and Gl 5 80 90 whih one is the one I should use Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I would go with the GL4 85 w 95. While GL5 is superior to GL4, the additional ant scuff additives in it is what corrodes our sensitive copper alloy synchronizer rings. Differentials contain no copper/bronze alloys and power transmission is through a 90 degree bend and the gear teeth need the extra scuff protection of GL5. Transmissions, on the other hand, transmit power through the same axis and don't. Quote Link to comment
mjja
Okay I will go buy that for my transmission then and use the other stuff for my differential Quote Link to comment
mjja
I went and bought the trany fluid and it says API/GL-4 i can use that right Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It would seem so. Quote Link to comment
