datzenmike
Not the same. The most obvious difference, (you'll say "Oh yeah, that's obvious, I knew that")... is that the 4X4 trannys do not have a spedo drive in them. Most aren't drilled out, some rare ones are, but have a cover plate on them. I have an '80 4X4 and it's not there. The speedo drive cog is in the transfer case. They are however, the same size and will swap as long as they are the same length. All that I have or have seen are 31.5" long but there are some at 26.3". I've tried on other forums to pinpoint which years or models have the shorter trannys but can't find anything in common. US may have got them and Canada not, or over the years owners have swapped them around. I have had two different lengths of primary drive shafts (tranny to trans case) so 4X4s did have them. There is probably a code on the transmissions but I don't know how to identify them by that. All I look for is the Z series bolt pattern (to motor), weather it has the speedo cog and length, 31.5" (though I would like to find a shorty) 2wd '81 through '86.5 1st.... 3.321 2nd.....2.071 3rd.....1.308 4th.... 1.000 5th.... 0.833 This almost identical tranny with different bell was used on the '77-'79 280z and 620 trucks. All 4wd to '84 (and the '80 720 with L20B 2 & 4wd) 1st... 3.592 2nd... 2.246 3rd....1.415 4th... 1.000 5th....0.813 This same tranny was used on the 7/'81-9/'83 200sx Z22E motor. All 4wd after '84 (Z24) 1st.... 3.592 2nd.... 2,057 3rd.... 1.361 4th.... 1.000 5th.... 0.813 This same tranny was used with different bell on the 10/'83-10/'84 200sx CA20E motor.
