Rising sun trunk panel

Hey guys, new here and trying not to tick people off with subjects that have been beaten to death, but ya gotta start somewhere right? Anyway, my search for a 510 still continues (I've even broadened my search to include a 620), but east coast living is pretty sad for datsuns. I was lucky enough to pick up a 510 trunk lid last week and since I don't have a 510 as of yet, I was just planning on painting a rising sun on it and using it as wall art for the time being. Since I know you guys love pics, here's said trunk lid in current condition.....

You guys have any advice for the painting of the rising sun? I'm planning on having it coming out of the bottom left corner like this.....

Just wondering what I should do about the rust spots though? Grind/sand it down to bare metal, paint the rising sun, then clear over everything? I'm not looking for some high class finish or anything, wanna keep it in true RATSUN fashion!

Check this out, plenty of us have done it. Sence the trunk looks to be red and you want to keep it ratty, I'd just mask it off to where you'd want the white, spray paint it, then when dry lightly sand the white to get a weathered look to it. Good luck with it, and post oics when you're finished. Also welcome to Ratsun!
