OlyRon
I recently went through an old 5-speed dogleg 210 transmission that had obviously been run low on oil. I replaced two bearings, a synchro and a thrust washer. On reassembly, the box seemed reasonably tight, but when reverse is engaged, it will not come out of gear. Other gears are fine. I pulled the detent ball with no improvement. I tore it back down, thinking the synchros and keys might just be dry - greased them up, same problem on reassembly. I can see scoring on the center of the keys where the synchro mechanism tries unsuccessfully to push them in. Any ideas here? One friend suggested I grind a more shallow bevel on the key pieces. Thanks for any help. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Reverse won't have synchros will it? Does the dogleg have a synchromesh reverse? Reverse and 5th are on the same shift fork. I need to know more about this tranny. Quote Link to comment

I need to know more about this tranny. You are correct that there is no balk ring on the reverse. Reverse and first gear are on the same fork. The key ("shifting insert" according to the book) is shaped different than the other gears, with an"L" shape on only the front end. If you have a Clymer manual, there is a blow up of the dogleg. The reverse gear seems to hang up and won't slide over the reverse mainshaft hub. Of course, there is a synchro ring on the forward end to engage first gear - works fine. If I manually depress the inserts, the reverse gear will slide forward. Seems like some problem with the inserts, but I'm not figuring it out. When I greased up the parts and put it together the second time, it did shift a few times before it locked. I did have in my friend's test vehicle (sand rail) when it locked and it does work in reverse. I plan to tear it down again tomorrow, but it is hard to get apart locked in reverse. That's all I can think to add. Quote Link to comment
