super rough idle and stall out if air cleaner is on

i have a 80 510(hla510) with stock carb and auto tranny.when the car is in park or neutral it idles high and rough about 2000-3000 rpms. when i put it in gear it idles alot rougher and at about 500-1800 rpms without the air cleaner on.if i put the air cleaner on it stalls out no matter what. i've tried adjusting everything i could think of.

your air cleaner sounds like it needs to be replaced.

 

if its all clogged up theres not enough air getting in with it on.

 

 

and have you checked your timing?

Air cleaner also has some vacuum connections. Perhaps they are not connected properly (or are leaking).

This will also cause a high idle.

 

The main one that eventually always leaks is the flap motor

But the air temp regulator (on the bottom of the air cleaner) can also be leaking too much. It is supposed to leak only a very little.
