Good question.

Bear with me on this. The L series has a saw tooth timing scale bolted to the timing chain cover and the timing mark is a small V notch in the rear pulley.

I'm just guessing here but the J series may have multiple V marks on the pulley and a single pointer bolted to the motor. Same thing really. (again, just guessing here) Set the motor to near TDC on the compression stroke and find those marks. Now look around near those marks for a pointer.

The reason for the wider gap on the first two marks is that they are 5 degrees each and you aren't ever going to need to set the timing at 5 or 10 degrees. The next two are likely 2 1/2 degree increments which is closer to where the timing will be set.

Again this is total speculation.
