I have always found them vulnerable to damage. My '78 was rust bubbling around it so I removed a filled it in. I got one of those flush mount ones from some later Nissan that collapse down flush with the roof. Chopped a squarish hole on the front driver's side of the roof with an angle grinder and mounted it there. The antenna consists of a plastic tube that is threaded down through the hollow pillar and ends up behind the driver's kick panel. When in use you extend the single wire out to length. If off road and in risk of a branch snapping it off when backing up or if in a crappy neighborhood just reach out while driving and push it down into the plastic sheath until. Out of sight, out of mind.
